Housing starts were down in July this year compared to last (886 units in 2026 versus 1,087 in 2025), and overall year-to-date housing starts continue to lag last year’s numbers. Through July 2025, 5,716 units were started and in the same period this year 5,006 were begun.

Of the units started in July this year, 171 were singles, 16 semis, 196 rows and 503 were apartments.

There were 15,779 units under construction in Ottawa in July 2026, almost exactly the number under construction at the same point last year – 15,771.  Of the units under construction last month, 1,007 were singles, 207 semis, 1,385 rows and 13,180 were apartments.

Year-over-year, July housing completions were up. In July 2026, 735 units were completed compared to 450 in July 2025 and 574 in July 2024. Of the units completed in July 2026, 71 were singles, 14 semis, 143 rows and 507 were apartments.

Year-to-date, housing completions are also up pretty significantly. 5,097 units have been completed to date in 2026 compared to 4,138 in 2025.
