Public art in Winston Square to be opened on June 10th

The City of Ottawa invites residents to attend the official opening celebration of Winston Chandelier, a recently-installed public art sculpture that was commissioned for the Winston Place Plaza development project on Richmond Road, Westboro.

Location:  Winston Square at the south end of Winston Avenue (between Westboro Legion and DQ along Richmond Road, Westboro).

Join Councillor Jeff Leiper and Westboro Village BIA at the official opening celebration of Winston Chandelier, a permanent public artwork by artists Joanna Swim and Adrian Göllner commissioned by the Public Art Program for the Winston Place Plaza development project. Stay for a reception following the opening celebration and to meet the artists.

Winston Chandelier was commissioned in May 2014 and shortlisted proposals were reviewed by the public. Taking into account more than 50 responses from the public, a selection committee of artists, community representatives and the project team responsible for the Winston Square development chose Winston Chandelier as the winning design.

Winston Chandelier is a large, bold and fanciful chandelier constructed from laser-cut stainless steel panels fitted into a hexagon, surrounding a light fixture in the centre. The bright red beacon illuminates Winston Square and features silhouettes of flora and fauna identified with the Westboro area, including the Spotted Turtle and Small Mouth Bass. The bracket supporting the chandelier represents the branch of a Mountain Ash tree, and suspends the artwork over the dining space created by the plaza development project.

The Winston Square public art installation was funded in part from the Kitchissippi Ward Cash-in-lieu of Parkland Fund with contributions from local Westboro-based business Domicile Developments.

Carré Winston : inauguration d’une œuvre d’art public le 10 juin

La Ville d’Ottawa invite les résidents à assister à l’inauguration officielle de Winston Chandelier, une sculpture d’art public commandée pour l’aménagement de l’esplanade de la place Winston (sur le chemin Richmond, à Westboro), où elle a récemment été installée.

Joignez-vous au conseiller Jeff Leiper et à la ZAC du village de Westboro pour l’inauguration officielle de Winston Chandelier, une œuvre d’art public permanente réalisée par Joanna Swim et Adrian Göllner pour l’aménagement de l’esplanade de la place Winston. S’ensuivra une réception en présence des artistes.

L’œuvre a été commandée par le Programme d’art public en mai 2014. Le comité de sélection, composé d’artistes, de représentants de la collectivité et de membres de l’équipe d’aménagement, a tenu compte de plus de cinquante commentaires du public, qui avait été invité à se prononcer sur des propositions présélectionnées.

Winston Chandelier consiste en un grand chandelier fait de panneaux en acier inoxydable rouge vif disposés en hexagone autour d’un luminaire. Ces panneaux arborent des silhouettes, découpées au laser, d’espèces animales et végétales présentes à Westboro, dont la tortue ponctuée et l’achigan à petite bouche. L’élégant et audacieux chandelier, suspendu à la représentation d’une branche de sorbier des oiseaux au-dessus de l’aire de repas de l’esplanade, illumine le carré Winston.

L’œuvre a été financée en partie par le fonds du quartier Kitchissippi destiné au règlement financier des frais relatifs aux terrains à vocation de parc, et par une contribution de Domicile Developments, une entreprise de Westboro.

La Ville d’Ottawa commande à des artistes professionnels des œuvres destinées à être exposées dans des espaces publics, œuvres qu’elle finance en mettant de côté un pourcentage des fonds destinés aux projets d’aménagement municipaux.
