Richmond/Churchill video analysis engine ready to go!

You are here

The corner of Churchill and Richmond is one of my least favourite in the ward. It's a very high-volume intersection, and the straight-only arrow for southbound traffic is routinely ignored. Pedestrians are often pressured during crossing, and depending where cars stop on eastbound Richmond, buses will hop the curb to make their turn. The corner in front of Gezelig has very little room for pedestrians to wait, and it all adds up to a very uncomfortable experience.

Working again with Kevin O'Donnell, I'm once again asking anyone interested to help us crowdsource traffic data and highlight unsafe practices. A week ago, I was out to film the intersection on a Sunday afternoon, and I saw lots of the behaviours I've otherwise been observing and hearing about.

Just by way of update, we're continuing to pursue any changes we can for Island Park/Byron and Harmer/Wellington. It's challenging. At Island Park/Byron, we're running into jurisdictional issues, and at Harmer/Wellington we're running up against the need to keep cars flowing with the long cycles. We'll keep plugging away.

To help us analyze Churchill/Richmond, please visit http://app.kevino.ca/traffic-vision/www/clip-make-observation.php?videoid=2. It was more challenging this time to get a good angle, but I think it's still useful to see what we can glean.
