Tree Removals in Iona Park

In late 2023, the City removed several mature trees in Iona Park due to various concerns.   The City is proposing the attached plan for tree replacement.  If you have any comments on what is being proposed, please let Laura Wood (laura.wood@ottawa.ca) know by March 18.  If you have any questions, Laura can be reached at the aforementioned email or at (613) 580-2424, ext. 24891.

Hampton Park Improvements

Friends of Hampton Park will be meeting on Sunday June 25 from 8:30 to 11:00 at the Island Park parking lot at Hampton Park to continue their park improvement work.  For further details and other opportunities to help with Hampton Park, please click on the attached link or contact Sharon at carlingtonhampton@gmail.com

Before the summer heat really sets in, Hampton could use your help!

Sunday June 25, 8:30 to 11 am, meet at the Island Park lot

Bring gloves and pruners. Long pants, closed toed shoes recommended. All other necessary equipment will be on site.

If you can’t make it until after 8:30, the majority of the work will be around the meadow area on the Island Park side so just hunt around and we should be easy to spot!

Tasks

1. Invasive removal: dog strangling vine, garlic mustard, knotweed (only small regrowth)

2. Weeding/pruning/watering in the new planting areas in the meadow. A diseased pin cherry in the middle of the meadow needs to be cut down and bundled for disposal.

3. Assistance with rain barrel: It’s positioned under the downspout of the small building so that rainwater is funneled into it but any hose attached to it will likely be stolen (the last one was). It can be plugged at the bottom and the water accessed from the top for now, but any other solutions on how we can better make use of it are welcome!

4. Assistance with sign holder instalment: I may not have this done in time, but if I do, we need to install a post in the meadow with the sign holder that lists the species/Ecology Ottawa partnership, etc.

If people want to stick around for about 30 minutes after 11 am, we can gather at a picnic table to chat about any issues or do some planning for summer events or fall projects.  We have a number of year-old tree seedlings that we may be able to plant this year in the Carlington Woods North, and I’ll be meeting with Councillor Brockington early next week to discuss the idea.

Monday June 26 and Tuesday June 27, beginning at 8 am

We have two NCC students and possibly one NCC staff member coming to clear the largest knotweed colony on Monday and Tuesday. Up until now, volunteers have been clearing regrowth and tarping this area. In two days, we should be able to do what it’s taken volunteers years of weekends to do!

We’ll start around 8 am. If you have even an hour to spare Monday and/or Tuesday morning to help out with the removal, let me know. It’s the usual spot where we’ve been cutting — beside the inner path that runs parallel to the creek bed — so look for us there.  I’ll be there until at least 2 pm on Monday and for as long as I need to be on Tuesday.

Cheers,

Sharon

Iona Park Rink

  1. While we have a group of dedicated volunteers, unfortunately the weather has not co-operated with us this year in getting our rink built.  While we were off to a good start after Christmas, the warm weather until this past weekend set us back.  We have started to flood again, but unfortunately, the City of Ottawa has restarted work on the new umbrella tables which will delay our flooding again by a few days.  While the work crew is in the park with their trucks we are not able to flood.   It takes about 15-18 floods to get a smooth ice surface.  While we like to get several floods done in a day, this is dependent on weather, volunteers and other’s using the park.   If you wish to help out, please forward your name to Hampton Iona Community Group and we will add your name to our list of volunteers.
  1. Like to skate or play hockey?  Looking to make a bit of money on evenings and weekends?  The Hampton Iona Community Group is looking to hire a couple of rink attendants for this winter’s rink season for our rink at Iona Park.  These positions are ideally suited for local high school or university students. This job involves supervising and helping to maintain the rink during the rink season.  Maintenance includes keeping the ice surface clear of snow and flooding the rink as required.  You have to be comfortable working on your own, typically for 5-10 hours per week depending on the number of attendants we have.  Pay will be minimum wage.  Any applicant over 18 will have to get a police check.  Please contact us immediately if you are interested or know someone who might be.

Hampton Iona Community Updates

The following are a few updates for our community:

  1. Bill 23 – Councillor Leiper will be having a Zoom question and answer session on November 23 at 7:00 pm to discuss the province’s proposed Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster.  This bill, if passed, will have significant impacts, including on what can be built where, the amount of money that can be raised through development charges on new construction (both infill and greenfield) and the ability to preserve wetlands.   More information on the session and the Zoom link can be found at Q&A Webinar: Bill 23 and changes to Ottawa city planning | Kitchissippi Ward.
  2. 114 Richmond Road – Ashcroft has resubmitted a Site Plan control application for 114 Richmond Road.  The city has indicated that the resubmission is very similar to the original application but has not pointed out the differences.  We have approached Councillor Leiper’s office for a better understanding of what has changed and for an update on construction of the proposed tower behind the convent and the rehabilitation of the convent.  A link to the site plan control application can be found at Ottawa.ca/devapps and by searching the address (114 Richmond Road) or the file number (D07-12-18-0080).
  3. New Parkette – 375 Byron Avenue – As part of the final development of the Loblaws site, a new parkette will be built to the west of the apartment block currently under construction.  The City is seeking input on the design of the parkette until November 30.  More information can be found at 375 Byron Avenue New Parkette | Engage Ottawa
  4. 2022/2023 Rink Season – We are currently in discussion with the City of Ottawa with respect to the signing of the rink contract for Iona Park.  We have traditionally operated our rink with a mix of volunteers and paid supervision staff.  During the past two years we did not open the trailer due to COVID, but currently the City is looking for the rinks to be operated as normal (i.e.: prior to the 2020/21 skating season).  At this time, we are looking for 1) new volunteers to help build and maintain the rink; and 2) paid attendants to supervise the rink.  We are required to provide 20 hours/week of supervision and we have traditionally hired local students for this role.  If you are interested in either volunteering for the rink or are interested in a part time job as a rink attendant please contact Lorne Cutler at lacutler@magma.ca.   We are also in the process of purchasing a new snow blower and expect to do so once the contract is signed.   Unfortunately, we have lost our beloved gazebo and the City has not yet installed the new umbrella tables.
