Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail

Back in the thick heat of summer, the Westboro Beach Community Association brought an idea to our office and the NCC: get a porition of the NCC pathway groomed for cross-country skiers, snowshoers, walkers and bikers to enjoy. Everyone felt as though it would be a great project and we are happy to announce that it is finally a reality. Please read the press release below. Ottawa – Skiers, snowshoers, walkers and snow bikers will soon enjoy a multi-use winter trail along the Ottawa River Pathway, right by the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. One track will be set for skiers, the other for snowshoers, walkers and snow bikers.

The proposed winter trail will connect the Canadian War Museum, with parklands along the Sir John A. Macdonald corridor all the way to Westboro Beach.

The Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail is a grassroots initiative led by the Westboro Beach Community Association, a not-for-profit community organization with a long, healthy history of partnerships, with the active collaboration of the National Capital Commission (NCC). Jeff Leiper, City Councillor for Kitchissippi provided support and assistance on this initiative.

Dave Adams of Nakkertok Ski Club, Canada’s largest ski club located in Cantley, Quebec is the project coordinator and chief groomer. He will oversee the first trial run on Friday, February 26^th. Skiers, snowshoers, walkers and snow bikers will be able to test the trails on Saturday, February 27^th.

The snowshoeing and walking track will follow the existing pathway. The ski track will be groomed (prepared) for skiing. Serpentine loops at open green spaces will add distance to the ski track for an expected distance of 16 kilometres.

Run as a pilot project this year, this initiative will see the trail groomed up to three times this winter with hopes of making it a regular service as early as next winter.

The LeBreton Flats, Bayview/O-train and Dominion public transit stations make it easy to access the Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail. Parking is available off the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway at the Canadian War Museum, the Champlain Bridge and Kitchissippi Lookout.

Le sentier d’hiver de Sir-John-A.-Macdonald

Ottawa – Les skieurs, les raquetteurs, les randonneurs et les amateurs de vélo d’hiver vont bientôt profiter d'un sentier d'hiver polyvalent le long du sentier de la Rivière-des-Outaouais, à côté de la promenade Sir John A. Macdonald. Une piste sera aménagée pour les skieurs, l'autre pour les raquetteurs, les randonneurs et les amateurs de vélo d’hiver.

Le sentier d'hiver proposé reliera le Musée canadien de la guerre, avec des espaces verts le long du corridor Sir-John-A.-Macdonald, jusqu’à la plage Westboro.

Le sentier d’hiver de Sir-John-A.-Macdonald est une initiative populaire dirigée par l'Association communautaire de Westboro Beach, un organisme sans but lucratif communautaire avec une longue et solide histoire de partenariats, avec la collaboration active de la Commission de la capitale nationale (CCN). Cette initiative jouit aussi du soutien et de l’aide du conseiller municipal pour Kitchissippi à la Ville d’Ottawa, M. Jeff Leiper.

M. Dave Adams, du club de ski Nakkertok, le plus grand club de ski au Canada, établi à Cantley (Québec), est le coordonateur du projet et dirigera le traçage et le damage. Il supervisera l’exécution des premiers essais vendredi le 26 février. Les skieurs, raquetteurs, les randonneurs et les amateurs de vélo d’hiver pourront tester les pistes samedi le 27 février.

La piste pour les raquetteurs, les randonneurs et les amateurs de vélo d’hiver suivra le sentier existant. La piste de ski sera tracée et damée, préparée pour le ski. Des boucles à travers les zones ouvertes des espaces verts ajouteront à la longueur de la piste pour en faire un parcours de ski de 16 kilomètres.

Conçue en projet pilote cette année, cette initiative verra le sentier d’hiver tracé et damé jusqu'à trois fois cet hiver avec l'espoir d'en faire un service régulier dès l'hiver prochain.

Les stations de transport en commun des plaines LeBreton, de Bayview/O-Train et de Dominion permettront un accès facile au sentier d’hiver de Sir-John-A.-Macdonald. Le stationnement est disponible sur la promenade Sir-John-A.-Macdonald au Musée canadien de la guerre, au pont Champlain et au belvédère Kitchissippi.
