Commemorative re-naming proposed to recognize Shawn Little

You are here

A City consultation has opened to recognize the contribution by former City Councillor Shawn Little to our ward by re-naming Somerset Square, at 2 Spadina, “Shawn Little Park.”

Below, I’ve copied the City’s material, which is on the official consultation release that you can find here.

Shawn passed in late 2012. He was our councillor from 1998-2006. In the years since he left office and then passed, his positive contributions have become more and more appreciated. This is especially true in Hintonburg, where he was a fierce advocate for a community facing serious challenges nearly alone.

I knew Shawn pretty well, and while president of the Hintonburg Community Association signed its letter of support for this commemoration. I still support it.

Details on how to participate in the consultation are available at the link above. It is open until April 10.

In recognition of Shawn Little’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to rename Somerset Square, at 2 Spadina Avenue, “Shawn Little Park”.

A summary of the proposal, submitted jointly by the Hintonburg Economic Development Committee and the Hintonburg Community Association, is provided below:

During his time in office, Shawn Little worked very closely with the Hintonburg Community Association’s Security Committee and formed strong relationships with the Ottawa Police Service and City staff to develop a comprehensive strategy to put the community on a positive footing for future growth and transformation.

In 2005, the Hintonburg Safety Partnership began under Shawn’s leadership. The Safety Partnership piloted a Landlord School, which successfully addressed a number of habitual problem properties and brought about permanent solutions to issues that had existed in the community for almost 20 years.

As City Councillor, Shawn helped form the Hintonburg Economic Development Committee. He understood that a vibrant main street would help bring positive changes to the community. Therefore, along with a group of residents and local businesses, he worked to beautify Wellington Street West, Somerset Street West and local parks and started holding several small, fun festivals in order to encourage families to get out and enjoy the parks. The Hintonburg Economic Development Committee’s first event was held in Somerset Square, which is the gateway to the community.
