Chris Elston plans to return to Broadview

Good afternoon, Kitchissippi.

There are strong indications that Chris Elston (“Billboard Chris”) plans to return to Broadview Avenue on June 9 to again demonstrate against affirming medical care for trans youth. There are further indications that he may be joined in his walk by allies in the far right movement. His social media indicates plans to walk north on Broadview from Carling Avenue at 11 am.

I have been in touch with police on multiple occasions over the past several weeks to ensure they are aware and prepared to respond to disorder. Police are monitoring social media to stay abreast of developments, and I have passed on the materials sent to me by residents with respect to how the demonstration is evolving. Police have assured me they will have the resources in place to respond to what they expect will be a fluid event.

Parents, neighbours and trans youth allies are preparing to counter-demonstrate, as they did in 2021. To be very clear, I believe Elston’s message is hateful, and I applaud efforts to peacefully counter-protest. My hope is to join you in that again.

This individual’s walk is constitutionally protected; he will be allowed to peacefully demonstrate in the right-of-way, as will counter-protesters. Police are aware of their duty to ensure the safety of all parties: protesters, counter-protesters and neighbours.

To the residents of Broadview, I know that you have recently received a letter that describes the evolving event. Please be assured that police are aware and that I will remain in communication with them in the lead-up to this protest.
