Dog Movie Night

One of Kitchissippi's quirky events is Dog Movie Night, something I've been happy to help organize past few years along with Global Pet Food and the Hintonburg Community Association. It will be held August 8 this year. Come out and enjoy!

Project updates: Jules Leger path, Scott Street sidewalk, Golden and Byron

I'm back from holidays and saw a note from our infrastructure folks sent to me on Friday - some good project updates worthwhile to pass on:

Councillor Leiper I wanted to inform you that construction for the projects mentioned below will be starting at these sites early next week. We are anticipating that they will be completed this fall with the exception of the Jules Leger Centre pathway where the majority of the heavy construction will be completed by August 22nd.

Ottawa Public Health Issues Closure Order on Acupuncture Clinic in Kitchissippi

Following up on a complaint from a member of the public, Ottawa Public Health issued a closure order on July 29th for New Acupuncture located at 1340 Wellington Street West.  The City released the following PSA today:

THE RIDE - a cycling fundraiser for cancer research

On the morning of Sunday, September 13, Kitchissippi Ward will be filled with hundreds of cyclists making their way to Tunney’s Pasture for THE RIDE – a fundraising/cycling event supporting cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital.

Now in its sixth year, THE RIDE has raised an impressive $8.8 million for cancer research taking place in our city. That’s something we can all be proud of.

Robert Henry Cowley and the Ottawa Board of Improvement

On the 9th of February 1922, the precursor to the National Capital Commission - the Ottawa Improvement Commission - and Robert H. Cowley entered into an agreement. The Commission granted Cowley the parcels of land adjacent to what is now Island Park Drive, subject to a number of restrictive covenants governing how those lots would develop. The covenants prohibited commercial traffic, largely gave the Commission design control over buildings, forced services to the rear of the lots and prescribed laneways.

Sharrow pilot on Wellington

Residents are used to seeing sharrows - the chevron/bike symbol - on roads across the city, but the most recent markings on Wellington between Parkdale and Holland have raised some eyebrows. What are they?

As I wrote a few newsletters ago, this corridor is the subject of a pilot to test new markings intended to improve cycling safety. New "bike priority" signage and "watch for bikes" went up a while ago, and with the addition of "dooring zone" markings on the road, the final elements are in place.

McRae Avenue Re-hab about to get underway

Work is just about set to get underway on a road, sewer and watermain rehab of McRae Avenue. Work should begin mid-July between Scott and Richmond Road, and will involve street closures and an on-street parking ban. Work is expected to be substantially completed by mid-December, with the likelihood of a spring final ashpalt lift.

Buses will be detoured during construction. Bus stops 4841, 4893 and 7377 will be closed. Detours are as follows, and shown in the graphic.

Reshaping Reid Park - July 18 and July 22 brainstorming sessions

The redevelopment of Reid Park has been in the making since 2013. This beautiful green space means so much to so many in the area and a prior consultation process determined ways that city funds for park improvements could be used to make it even more useful for the surrounding community.
