Municipal broadband: OpenMedia's latest campaign

City councillors are starting to get a small stream of form emails advocating for what is often called “municipal broadband”. It’s been a frequent topic of discussion over the years, and it’s good to see Open Media putting it back on the front-burner as the organizer of this campaign.

Cornerstone project on Princeton wins funding

We received word yesterday that the Cornerstone project at the Sisters of Jeanne D'Arc Institute on Princeton was chosen as one of three Action Ottawa affordable housing projects in the most recent round. I'm very pleased with the news. We last looked at this in October, and had the opportunity to show the concept at a well-attended open house. Briefly, the funding would be used to create 42 bachelor suites of supportive, affordable housing for women in the current building. The rest of the Sisters' property would be developed with around 16 private market homes, mostly semis.

Canada 150th Groves Project

Last year, city staff started working with councillors on the Canada 150 Groves project. As part of Canada's sesquicentennial, the project is meant to leave a lasting legacy by planting a grove of 150 native Canadian maple trees in each of the 23 wards.

We can now officially say Kitchissippi's grove will be located at 170 Island Park Drive, or the northwest corner of Island Park and the Sir John A Macdonald Parkway.

All we know now is that planting will occur either in the spring or fall, but more details will come and as they do, we will pass them on.

Pedestrian improvements coming to Richmond and Churchill

Some time ago, I held a meeting with City staff, the Churchill Seniors Centre and Westboro Community Association to highlight the serious pedestrian safety challenges at the corner of Richmond and Churchill. Staff heard us and have been exploring potential improvements. I’m very pleased to say that the City appears ready to embark on some changes.

Loretta Avenue Primary Design

Despite the winter weather, we had a strong turnout for the Loretta Avenue Public Information session on January 10. Anyone who missed the session can find the primary design here. Another open house, likely to be scheduled in April, will address construction staging and traffic issues that may come up with the project. Thanks again to all who attended.
