Wellington Diner applies for patio re-zoning

You are here

As has been foreshadowed in the media last summer, the Wellington Diner (1385 Wellington Street West) has filed for permission to operate a patio in the fenced-off portion of the property by way of a re-zoning. This has been an off-and-on proposal for several years, with the restaurant’s last attempt to get permission by way of a minor variance turned down by the Ontario Municipal Board a few years ago.

I am supportive of the application. A new noise study commissioned by the restaurant indicates that the noise it would generate would be less than the ambient noise of traffic most of the time. I do not believe that it would have any significant impact on the quality of life of nearby residents, while many have expressed a desire to see it in operation. There are, however, objections from residents concerned about noise and other issues that will need to be worked through.

This is a re-zoning, so will go through all the usual process. I will be asking the owner to attend a community meeting to discuss the plans, and the public consultation phase should be open on this application soon. You can view all the documentation associated with the application here. When we have a date for that meeting, I'll let everyone know.
