Ste-Foy shooting: message from the Chief of Police

Please find below a message from the Chief of Police about last night's attack in Ste-Foy. I would just add that early this morning, I spoke with both the Ottawa Mosque and National Council of Canadian Muslims to offer my condolences and whatever help I and my office can provide.

This weekend was unsettling and surreal. Family Services Ottawa is located in our community at 312 Parkdale, and has walk-in counselling hours tomorrow, as does Jewish Family Services of Ottawa on Wednesday at 300-2255 Carling Avenue. We have had a chance to speak with some of you over the last 24 hours following the terrible tragedy in Ste-Foy, Québec.

I want you to know that we are also aware of the impact this attack has had on all of our communities locally. The members of the Ottawa Police Service are committed to your safety and security and we have increased our vigilance and presence at local religious institutions.

We continue to be in contact with all of our security partners including the RCMP and the Sûreté du Québec as their investigation continues.

These types of events affect us all and we understand that they have a profound impact on many in our diverse communities.

The Ottawa Police Service has long standing relationships with our various faith and community groups and leaders.  It is with this relationship in mind that we encourage you to share this information as widely as possible with members of your respective communities.  Ensuring public safety can only be done with the support of the communities we serve.

If at any time, you or a member of your community feels that there is a life-threatening emergency or crime in progress, you are strongly encouraged to call 9-1-1.

On a eu l'occasion de s'entretenir avec plusieurs d'entre vous au cours des dernières 24 heures qui ont suivi la terrible tragédie survenue à Sainte-Foy, au Québec.

Je tiens à ce que vous sachiez que nous sommes également conscients de l'effet de choc que cette attaque a eu sur chacune de nos collectivités locales. Les membres du Service de police d'Ottawa sont résolus à assurer votre sûreté et votre sécurité, et nous avons accru notre vigilance et notre présence dans les centres religieux locaux.

Nous demeurons en communication avec nos collègues des autres organismes de sécurité, notamment la GRC et la Sûreté du Québec, alors qu'ils poursuivent leur travail d'enquête.

Des événements de ce type nous bouleversent tous, et nous réalisons quelles graves répercussions ils ont au cœur de plusieurs de nos diverses collectivités.

Le Service de police d'Ottawa entretient des relations de longue date avec nos groupes communautaires et religieux et leurs dirigeants. C'est dans cet esprit que nous vous prions de diffuser ces renseignements le plus largement possible auprès des membres de vos collectivités respectives. On ne pourrait assurer la sûreté du public sans l'appui et le soutien des gens dont nous sommes au service.
