It's going to snow. The City has a plan.

You are here

It's that time! Here's the latest snow update from the City.

The purpose of this email is to provide an update on the November 19 - 21 winter weather event and to highlight the City’s preparations for this early season event.

Weather Conditions

The forecast is calling for showers to start late this afternoon, early evening changing to rain by 8 pm. Rain will continue through the late evening and overnight as temperatures hover around 2C. Rain mixed with flurries is predicted to start at 5 am Sunday morning but limited  accumulation is expected as the surface temperatures (asphalt) will be on the plus side. The warm asphalt should melt snow and ice on contact through early Sunday morning.

Temperatures are then expected to dip down to around 0C by 2 pm where accumulation may begin. Flurries will turn into snow Sunday afternoon. Rates are expected to be less than 1 cm an hour through Sunday afternoon, evening and overnight. Flurries are probable through the Monday morning commute and will last all day Monday. Temperatures are projected to be around -2C on Monday.

Total accumulations with this Colorado low are expected to be in the 15 cm +/-range.

Preparations

Roads Services staff will start plowing and salting the priority road network as accumulations start of the rain/snow event. Staff will concentrate their efforts on the priority network ensuring the movement of transit and the travel of commuters using the arterial roads.

Roads Services have day and night staff on call and as the accumulations begin staff will be deployed. There will be challenges with the Monday morning commute as this is the first significant event of the season.

We will provide operational updates to Council if weather conditions change.
