Help us with a holiday tree bee in Westboro Beach!

You are here

Earlier this fall, residents in Westboro Beach, and particularly Van Lang, raised the possibility of lighting a tree in Roy Duncan Park. I am very grateful for the work done by our parks department to get a new power outlet into the park to make that possible. But, for a variety of reasons, the actual tree decoration and lighting is going to need a little extra community help to accomplish.

On Sunday, December 11, I'm hoping many of you can join me and some Westboro Beach Community Association reps in the park just north of Churchill/Scott (click for a map) to get that big evergreen tree decorated and lit. We'll need a few bodies to help out our neighbours. Giant Tiger is making a generous donation of some strings of lights, and on the weekend I'll be buying a bunch as well, along with some outdoor extension cords (we'll need a few). If you're able, please join me at 2:30 in the park with ladders, poles, lights and extension cords to string the holiday lights. At 5, we'll light it up and commemorate the first annual tree-lighting team's efforts with a photo. If we work quickly, there'll be a chance to duck into Moe's for some pizza in between.

If you can't help out with the work party, no sweat! I hope you'll be able to join us for the tree-lighting itself. It will be a low-key affair and chance to gather to celebrate our community. I might sing (or not, if the community prefers).

My thanks again to the City working with Ottawa Community Housing for getting an outlet into the park; it will definitely be useful year-round for all kinds of programming.
