Bayswater speed data

You are here

Residents likely recall the controvery this summer when speed humps went in on Bayswater that didn't meet the standard. They were too high, and drivers were complaining. The three southerly humps were investigated, and re-built to be a little smaller, which upset some residents since they weren't having as drastic an effect on speed. To help me get a handle on what effect the humps were having, my office asked staff to do some speed surveys, which was done in early August.

Pictured with this post is the quick graph I made of the study done from August 9 at noon till noon on August 10 on Bayswater from Beech to Hickory. I'm pleased to see that around 2/3 of the 2658 cars they measured were travelling below 30 km/h, and another quarter below 35 km/h. I've attached the full results for the study below - click on the two .pdfs. I'm working with these figures converted to a .xls, but am not sharing that since I can't be fully confident that the data is clean. If you'd like the spreadsheet that I'm working with, it does need a little more clean-up; email me.

I'm very satisfied with these results. In fact, the humps are working well enough that they've brought Bayswater's operational speed down low enough to reduce the speed limit south of Young street to 30 km/h. That's great news. It's encouraging to me that so many streets in the ward are getting the 30 km/h designation, and we'll persist in trying to achieve more.
