Council wrap-up: budget, planning and camping

It was a busy City Council meeting for Kitchissippi yesterday and I thought it would be useful to provide a quick wrap-up of the highlights. I’ve stressed the budget for most of this post, but skip further down for updates on for yesterday’s discussion on Planning Advisory Committees, urban camping, and the 307 Richmond heritage approval.

Budget

The key item, of course, was the budget.

Wynne announcement on safety cameras, lower speeds in school zones: McKenney, Leiper

This morning, Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that the provincial government will introduce legislation to allow cities to use speed cameras and reduce speed limits in school zones. Councillors Catherine McKenney (Somerset) and Jeff Leiper (Kitchissippi) applaud this intiative, which reflects a longstanding desire on the part of residents of both wards for safer streets.

Urban Forest Management Plan update

City staff have been working for a little more than a year now on the Urban Forest Management Plan with the goal of looking for ways to protect, maintain, and enhance the urban forest -- all trees and their habitat within the urban area boundary, both public and private.

While the city has many policies in place to regulate our trees, this plan will provide a long-term vision we've never had before.

Camping in Tom Brown for 2017 Canada Day visitors

Today at Council, notice was made of a motion to come to our next Council meeting on November 9 to allow camping at several locations - including Tom Brown arena - from June 29 to July 4 in 2017. We're expecting a lot of visitors to Ottawa, and reasonably-priced hotel accomodations are already hard to find.
